Until it started cooling down, they'd been brutal. Hoping to stop by tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Thanks to all (5 of us) who were at Trapfest. Only three of us braved the elements and camped overnight, but we had a nice time, except for the thumping of heavy metal coming from the camp custodian's trailer ALL NIGHT! It was still going strong at 7AM, when we retired to the Rod and Gun club for a hearty breakfast.
Fishing was a contrast - I fished two streams south and west of 14 on Saturday, and although I only caught a few, I'd put that up to user error. I saw a couple fish that folks tend to measure in pounds slurping flies and ducking back inside the undercuts, but had no chance with them. The rivers themselves looked great, no major changes from when I'd fished them in the early summer. Sunday I fished east of 14. My favorite spot on the West Fork Kickapoo was utterly destroyed. the river is now about twice as wide and half as deep, scoured and featureless, and much of the gravel was deposited right against the rip-rap that had been placed years ago along the hillside and that had a nice stretch to fish. Now that place is 25 feet from the water, which was diverted over what had been pasture, and now is a sandy beach. The was a nice hole there with a huge downed tree that I am sure had some 20"+ browns in there, utterly gone. It didn't even look like the same river. It's going to require major work to be very good for the trout. Knapp Creek also looked terrible. |
