Anyone heading up to Minnesota's North Shore this spring for steelhead should be aware of this new research project -- because anglers are the key.
The Minnesota DNR wants to gather DNA from the naturalized wild population of steelhead (not Kamloops). They have packets for anglers to gather scales and mail them in. Distribution should start Saturday at Great Waters Expo.
Here's a story I did on the effort and here's a video for how to collect the scales (do NOT scrape against the grain).

Sorry if this is considered off-topic because steelies ain't driftless residents, but I know a lot of you guys hit the steelhead run and will be at Great Waters.

Thank you for the heads up. I'll be sure to do my part if I can manage to land one.
