They’re very much around in this part of Ontario. They’re at a tiny fraction of their pre-settlement abundance, but the odds are in your favor of landing a fish or two when you time it right. Boat fishing them out in the islands is very effective in the summer.

I probably could’ve crushed them on Sunday afternoon, some switch had flipped and the fish were completely all in. 3 strikes in 5 casts with a 15, in a pool that had produced one bite the day before. But I caught that 21 I’d wanted so badly the day before, and decided to let the rest lay undisturbed.

How can you tell the difference if the trout has lived in the stream all its life or if he swam in from the great lakes?

The colors are usually quite different. Lake runners tend to be more silvery and less orange, and their spots kind of look like x's or plus signs and usually lack halos. Body shapes are often different too, with lakers tending to be 'taller,' or more football shaped. It's certainly not an exact science, but usually one can make a pretty good educated guess.
