Well it was the last day of salmon season... And the bite finally turned on!!! Me and my buddy Mike hiked 2 hours thru some brush and found some untouched water.. It started fast and ended fast. He caught and released a gorgeous 17resident brown. I then realized my bale on my reel was broken off on one side. Horrible. I still cast and get one Bang! 21coho! Mike returns fire with a 21 of his own. Then steps on his reel and breaks his crank off his reel! 2 guys.. 2 phucked reels! Didnt matter.. We proceed to limit out! 7 outta one hole! My favorite stream in Washington State has 3 reservoirs on it; on the 25 or so miles above them, the rules are "single, barbless hook, no bait. That technically means you could fish spinners with a single barbless hook, but in practice, 99% of the legal fishing (lots of poaching by the local Ukranian population) is done with a fly.
But near here, I haven't seen any. I still predominately fly-fish for trout, but this year have probably increased to spin fishing for them about 30% of the time. When I am use the spin rod I almost always throw spinners like you mention, with 1 barbless hook. Doesn't seem to hinder my hook-up or catch rate significantly. So I think folks who interpret those regs as anti- spin fishing are reading too much into it. And in all honesty it's a lot easier to keep a fish hooked with a large barbless spinner hook than a barbless fly in my experience.
