I typically visit my mother on Wednesdays. I go a little early and fish at the dam there. Second cast I had a behemoth pike turn at the wall. It was so big it made my knees shake. I threw right back in there and this one slammed it. I was actually disappointed that I caught this one instead of the monster. I have a superstition that makes me stop fishing after catching one large pike or trout . The rematch may be on Mother's Day or next Wednesday. That's a pretty nice pike too. I'd like to see the beast you didn't get. Good luck next time around! Can't wait for the picture.

Nice Pike.
That's not a very sporting way to handle the fish unless you intend to keep it.
Good luck on the big one.

with some fish i'd agree, but pike, muskie and walleye i feel that's not a bad way to hold the fish. (i'm guessing you're talking under the gill plate)

Good luck on the big one. Just a heads up Confluence. This site is user friendly. We don't beat the C/R Only drum here.

I bet it was tasty too! Pike are better when they get bigger, imo. I agree with flyfishingfreak, holding a pike that way doesn't do anything. Worst thing to happen would be getting gill raked, but that would hurt Len, not the fish.

With a gator like that I'm guessing Len clubbed him with his PRIEST a few times to get the fish to settle down before photo time. With the wahoo in Aruba the captain had a mini aluminum bat they hit the fish before bringing it on the boat.
Len you should consider gloves and a big set of jaw spreaders for these gators. They will rip your fingers to shreds, even more so than big browns! |

My apologies for not being more clear. I agree that it is fine to handle these species by the gill plate. However lifting them and or holding them vertically by just the gill plate is a certain way to cause damage to the fish. Obvious all of this is a non-issue in this case because the fish was kept. Not positive on how to upload images. The guy is using the gill plate to hold the fish, but supporting it and holding it horizontally.

Sounds tasty. Nothing against catch and keep if one follows the regs. You hadn't stated in the post that u did harvest Mr. Gator.
